Welcome to the Phoenix Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter
For nearly nine decades, the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated have been part of the story of Black leadership, service and civic engagement in Arizona.
That legacy began on May 22, 1937, when Delta Sigma Theta chartered Beta Theta Chapter in Phoenix as a combined collegiate and alumnae chapter. At a time when Black women throughout Arizona were building institutions, expanding educational opportunities and strengthening their communities, Beta Theta created an organized presence through which college-educated Black women could advance the Sorority’s commitment to sisterhood, scholarship, service and social action.
Thirty-five years later, that foundation entered a new chapter. On May 11, 1972, Phoenix Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter was chartered as the 426th chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. One day later, on May 12, the Chapter helped establish Iota Kappa Chapter at Arizona State University, extending Delta’s presence to another generation of collegiate women in Arizona.
A Legacy of Sisterhood, Service & Impact in Arizona
Today, Phoenix Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter serves Phoenix and communities throughout Maricopa County while continuing a tradition rooted in purposeful service. Through educational initiatives, scholarships, social action, economic empowerment, health and wellness programming, cultural enrichment, youth development and community partnerships, the Chapter works to address the evolving needs of the communities it serves.
PMAC’s story, however, is about more than charter dates or individual programs. It is part of a much larger history of Black women organizing, educating, advocating and creating opportunities in Arizona. Across generations, members of Delta Sigma Theta have helped strengthen institutions, encourage civic participation, elevate Black culture and connect local communities to a national sisterhood of service.
From the women who established Delta’s presence in Phoenix in 1937 to the sorors carrying that work forward today, Phoenix Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter remains committed to honoring its history while continuing to build what comes next.
